Comments The Stephen Party, the first to use what later came to be called Donner Pass, encountered several granite ledges like this one that cane seen from the parking area on route 40. The only way to get over the ledge was to disassemble the wagons and hoist them, as well as the cattle, up and over the ledge. The exact path of the Stephens party is unknown because the topography of the pass has subsequently been changed considerably by the building of the roads, railroads and communications lines.
