Comments Built by Hacaliah Bailey, who brought one of the first elephants to the U. S. to work on his farm. Instead of using the elephant on his farm, he started a traveling show featuring the elephant. When the elephant was tragically shot by a local farmer, its bones were acquired and displayed by the Barnum Museum in New York City. Bailey erected an obelisk topped by an elephant sculpture to honor his deceased elephant. Later Bailey's nephew joined forces with Bailey to create the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
