Comments Fort Sumner was a military fort charged with the internment of nearby Navajo and Mescalero Apache populations from 1863 to 1868. The Maxwell family bought the old fort and used it as their ranch headquarters. Billy the Kid was killed by Pat Garrett in the Maxwell home, which had formerly been the officers quarers for the fort.
