Comments Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 to link Chicago to Los Angeles, a distance of 2,440 miles (3,927 km). It was updated and realigned over the years, but the Historic Route 66 can still be traced. The Illinois segment, the first to be completed, starts on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and heads along I-55, past classic roadside architecture of the 1930s to 1950s, all the way to East St. Louis on the Mississippi.
PLANNING: Allow two to three days. Best from spring through fall. An alternative route after Springfield follows Ill. 4.
